The MCS-150 Biennial Update: Do Not Miss It

August 27, 2026 · 4 min read

Motor carriers with a USDOT number are required to keep their registration information current, and that is done through a periodic MCS-150 update.

It is required even if nothing changed

This is the part carriers get wrong most often. The update is not only for reporting changes — it is required on schedule regardless, confirming the information is still accurate.

When it is due

The schedule is tied to your USDOT number and the last digits determine the timing. It is worth knowing your specific month rather than guessing, and worth setting a reminder well ahead of it.

What happens if it lapses

  • Your USDOT number can be deactivated.
  • Operating with an inactive number is a violation.
  • Civil penalties may apply.
  • It can affect your operating authority and your ability to work.
  • It shows up at roadside and at audit.

What the update covers

  • Company name and address.
  • Contact information.
  • Number of power units and drivers.
  • Type of operation and cargo classifications.
  • Mileage.

Report changes when they happen, not only at the biennial. A change of address that is not reported means official correspondence goes to the wrong place, and you are still responsible for responding to it.
