What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment

August 4, 2026 · 5 min read

The single biggest reason a tax appointment takes longer than it should is a missing document. Here is the list, so you only come in once.

Identification

  • Photo ID for you and your spouse.
  • Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone on the return, including children.
  • Last year's tax return, if you have it. It saves time and it catches carryovers.
  • Bank account and routing numbers, if you want direct deposit.

Income documents

  • W-2 from every employer you worked for during the year.
  • 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC if you did contract work.
  • 1099-INT, 1099-DIV or 1099-B for interest, dividends or investment sales.
  • 1099-G for unemployment.
  • 1099-R for retirement distributions.
  • SSA-1099 for Social Security.
  • Records of any self-employment income, including cash.

Expenses and deductions

  • Childcare provider name, address and tax ID, plus what you paid.
  • Tuition statements (1098-T) and student loan interest (1098-E).
  • Mortgage interest (1098) and property tax records.
  • Charitable donation receipts.
  • Medical expense records, if they were substantial.
  • Records of estimated tax payments you made during the year.

If you are self-employed

  • Income records for the full year, not just the 1099s you received.
  • Expense records — receipts, bank statements, card statements.
  • Mileage log, if you drove for work.
  • Home office measurements, if you claim one.
  • Equipment purchases.

If you are missing something, come anyway. It is usually easier for us to tell you exactly what is needed than for you to guess at home.

Applying for an ITIN

If you or a dependent need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, the documentation requirements are specific and the application goes with the return. Bring original documents or certified copies, and ask us before you send anything.
