New to Midland: The Paperwork Checklist

September 11, 2026 · 4 min read

Midland draws people from across the country and from outside it. The administrative side of arriving is worth doing early rather than in a rush.

First few weeks

  1. 01Establish an address and keep proof of it. Almost everything else asks for one.
  2. 02Texas driver licence or identification card.
  3. 03Vehicle registration and Texas insurance, if you brought a vehicle. Our title transfer note covers the vehicle side.
  4. 04Open a local bank account.
  5. 05Confirm your employer has your correct withholding information on file.

Tax considerations

  • Texas has no state income tax, which is a real difference if you came from a state that does. You may still have a part-year filing obligation in the state you left.
  • Moving mid-year can mean filing in two states for that year.
  • If you are here on a contract rather than as an employee, our note on 1099 work covers what changes.
  • Keep records from the move, in case they matter.

If you are starting a business here

Our notes on LLC formation, EINs and Texas sales tax cover the setup, and general services includes the formation paperwork.

Keep every document from the move in one folder — lease, utility connection, employment letter, vehicle paperwork. You will be asked for proof of address and proof of residency more often in the first year than at any other time.
