What to Bring to Get a Document Notarized

September 4, 2026 · 3 min read

A notarization takes a few minutes when everything is in order. Here is what to have.

Identification

  • Valid and unexpired.
  • Government issued, with a photograph and a signature.
  • The name must match the name on the document. A mismatch is the single most common reason we cannot proceed.

The document, unsigned

Do not sign before you arrive. The notary has to witness the signature. A document already signed generally cannot be notarized as it stands.

Bring the complete document, with no blank spaces left to fill later.

Everyone who signs

Every signer must be present in person with their own identification. One person cannot sign for another without proper legal authority documented separately.

Any required witnesses

Some documents require witnesses in addition to the notary. Check the document before you come, and bring them.

The signer must be able to understand what they are signing and be signing willingly. A notary who has doubts about either is required to decline, and that is a protection for the signer.
